The
Institute is situated in Haliyal one of the taluk of Uttara Kannada districts
of Karnataka State. Haliyal is one of backward taluks of the U.K. district.
Total population of the district is around 13 lacs and Haliyal Town is having
2 lacs of population. Around 80% of the land of the District is covered by forest.
The literacy level of the District is 67% whereas of Haliyal taluk has 60% of
literacy. However the literacy rate amongst woman is considerably low. Totally
there are 56198 people have registered in employment exchange seeking employment.
Out of that around 43279 are having education level of SSLC and below. The majority
of the Population belongs to Sidddhis, Goulis and Tribal communities in Haliyal
and Mundgod Taluks, which are adjacent areas. Kunabi community is also major
factor in population. Hence these communities are engaged in these traditional
activities and ignored the formal education. The main occupation of the people
of the district are agriculture, animal husbandry, forest based activities like
honey extracting, forest products collection, fishing. In rural areas main occupation
is agriculture labour. There are 6876 small & tiny industries functioning
in the district.
