His excellency the ex-president of India, Sri A P J Abdul Kalam, advised the state to take up textile as one of the missions for Karnataka's prosperity. With the advent of WTO regime since January 2005, opportunities for exporting garments have increased enormously. Karnataka is emerging as a textile hub of the country. Garment industry in the state provides employment to nearly 4 lakhs of people. Women account for more than 90% of work force. A conservative estimate of the manpower requirement during the next five year works out to 3.5 lakh persons. Educated unemployed youth need various skill-sets in order to make them employable by the readymade garment industry. This calls for establishment of Apparel Training & Production Center at potential districts. |

- To meet emerging demand for skilled personnel from RMG industry.
- To impart requisite skills, structured training programs in various skills in a methodical manner.
- To empower the rural/semi urban youth to seek gainful wage employment and self employment.

| Need for establishing ATPC in Uttar Kannada |
Based on the needs of the RMG projects cleared for other districts, it was suggested by Govt of Karnataka, RDPR department that the envisaged training and production center may be established in Uttar Kannada district also.

| Deshpande RUDSETI was Identified |
Govt of Karnataka Rural development and Panchayathraj Department identified Deshpande RUDSETI in Uttar Kannada to establish ATPC at Dandeli in view of its world class infrastructural facilities and involvement in systematic training approach. Govt has provided Rs.15.50 Lakhs from SGSY infrastructure fund for purchasing of machineries. CAPART will provide the recurring expenditure of Rs.4 Lakhs per annum. The total estimated project cost is Rs. 19.50 Lakhs |
